Qualitative Health Research in Action

NAVICARE/SOINSNAVI

In December 2014, a local research team led by Dr. Shelley Doucet (UNB Saint John) and Dr. Rima Azar (Mount Allison University) was awarded a $750,000 four year grant from the New Brunswick Children’s Foundation to implement NaviCare/SoinsNavi, which is the first navigation centre for children with complex care needs and their families in NB. After a needs assessment phase, NaviCare/SoinsNavi was launched as a pilot project in early January 2017.

The qualitative needs assessment involved over 120 qualitative interviews with children and their families and other stakeholders involved in their care. A mixed methods evaluation is ongoing and involves exploring the short and long-term impact of the centre. For more information contact the Senior Research Associate, Dr. Alison Luke, at aluke1@unb.ca.

There is a current crisis with the use of opioid drugs in many parts of Canada that is having an impact on consumers of these drugs and the general population. In 2016 there was an estimated 2458 overdose deaths related to opioids in Canada, and there has been an increased demand for emergency responders and healthcare professionals to react to this significant health issue with evidence-based clinical responses.

A Harm Reduction Symposium was hosted April 24 at the Saint John Regional Hospital and brought together many stakeholders to discuss current research, raise awareness, educate, and enhance harm reduction collaboration. It was a resounding success and featured renowned researchers, Dr. Marilou Gagnon and Dr. Don MacPherson. The exciting weekend of talks and events will spur momentum to produce a variety of harm reduction initiatives as well as qualitative and mixed methods evaluation projects. Please contact Dr. Dan Nagel at dnagel@unb.ca for more information about the research presented at the symposium or contributing to starting a research program in Saint John in this area.
